Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil (SD-4) took a major step toward disrupting organized crime in the illicit fentanyl trade by introducing SB 226, which would make it a felony to possess fentanyl while carrying a loaded, operable firearm. Up until now, only methamphetamine, crack, cocaine, heroin, and PCP were specifically listed under the law banning simultaneous possession of a loaded firearm and drugs. SB 226 would correct this oversight by recognizing that fentanyl, over 50 times more powerful than heroin, should be included on that list




Corporal Ronil Singh of the Newman Police department was fatally shot after pulling over a suspected drunk driver on Christmas Eve 2018. Cpl. Singh was born in Fiji, but immigrated to the US in 2003 and joined the Newman police force in 2011. He left behind a wife and baby boy.




Today, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution presented by Senator Alvarado-Gil to proclaim February 16 as California Almond Day. If you eat an almond anywhere in the world, there’s an 80% chance it was grown in California, and if you are in US, that figure rises to 100%.




Yesterday, Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil (D-Jackson) introduced SB 375 to provide employers with financial relief from the cost of compliance with the new COVID-19 workplace safety standards that took effect on February 4. SB 375 would provide an annual credit against state payroll taxes to reimburse employers for costs such as testing, masking, ventilation systems, exclusion from work, and other pandemic-based regulatory compliance costs.




On January 31, 24-year-old Selma Police Officer, Gonzalo Carrasco, was shot down in cold blood by convicted felon, Nathaniel Dixon, who was out on early release due to the provisions of Assembly Bill 109. Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil (SD4) and Assemblyman Juan Alanis (AD22) are uniting together to review the egregious oversights resulting from AB 109, which allowed convicted felon and gang member, Nathaniel Dixon out on early release after serving just 5 months of 5 year, 4 month sentence.




Senator Alvarado-Gil paid tribute yesterday on the Senate floor to the life of Dr. Rex Fortune, a husband, father, educator, author and advocate who passed away on January 29, 2023 at the age of 81. He devoted his life to lifting up the most vulnerable students and closing the academic achievement gap, in doing so he made a lasting impact on the lives of countless students and faculty members during his extensive career.
