Every 68 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted, yet only 30% of these assaults are reported to law enforcement. Victims and survivors of sexual assault must receive equitable justice, while perpetrators should expect nothing less than being held fully accountable.
l led the charge this week to call on a reform to California’s laws surrounding sex crimes, specifically the rape of an intentionally intoxicated person. Did you know this specific type of rape is considered “non-violent” in California? As a society, we can no longer look at and treat ANY form of rape as “non-violent.“ I held a press conference spotlighting Senate Bill 268 and was joined by survivors, lawmakers, and dignitaries supporting this monumental effort. SB 268 will close dangerous legal loopholes that fail to recognize the violence of rape. Join me in standing for survivors and demanding justice for perpetrators of this despicable crime. We must end sexual violence, and change must come now!
I thank everyone who attended and spoke at my press conference to support this legislation, including California State Treasurer Fiona Ma. I also thank Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis for her support and acknowledgement that California needs to have robust laws against sexual violence.
Join me in supporting SB 268 and watch my press conference.
