Happy Friday Senate District 4,

Just a few days ago, I announced I would be withdrawing my name as co-author immediately from two retail theft bills that will be amended to make them inoperable if voters pass the Proposition 47 reform measure this November. I oppose the amendments to these two bills, and I was not consulted about them prior. Let me be clear - I do support the Prop 47 reform initiative and believe the voters have the right to vote on this. This is not about the policy, it’s about the politics.

Senate Bill 820 passed out of the Assembly Business & Professions Committee, this week. The illegal cannabis market has caused major economic and environmental damage in California – it has poisoned our wildlife and has resulted in hundreds of millions of gallons of stolen water from farms and neighboring communities. Today, two-thirds of all cannabis sales conducted in California are still taking place in the illicit market. We must deter illicit operators and promote entrance into the legal, regulated cannabis market. Sb 820 now heads to the Assembly Public Safety Committee. Senate Bills 1197 and 1396 also advanced out of the Assembly Human Services Committee. Every family in California should receive the support they need, especially those who care for dependent foster children and non-minors. SB 1197 will correct outdated regulations and help keep children in loving homes. Additionally providing families with the benefits of the Home Visiting Program until a child is five years old is crucial in aiding with their mental development. Investing in our children today will guarantee a brighter tomorrow, and SB 1396 would make this possible for every family in California. These two bills now move into the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
