Senator Wants the Release of Violent Predators to Stop

SENATOR ALVARADO-GIL FIGHTS FOR VICTIMS

Senator Alvarado-Gil (D-Jackson), a co-author of the "Sexually Violent Predator Accountability, Fairness, and Enforcement Act" (SAFE Act), has proven to be steadfast in her efforts to press for transparency and community safety when it comes to the release of sexually violent predators. The recent development surrounding the case of William Stephenson, an SVP previously proposed for placement in Amador County, has now resurfaced with a proposed release as a transient in Placer County, raising serious concerns among residents and local officials.

In March, Amador County successfully defeated the placement of William Stephenson within their community, citing concerns about public safety and the potential risks posed to the population, especially schoolchildren, due to numerous school bus stops near the proposed residence.

However, despite the rejection in Amador County, the issue has now arisen again, with a new proposed placement in Placer County as a transient. This move has triggered opposition from Senator Alvarado-Gil and concerned residents, who continue to prioritize community safety and demand transparency in the placement process.

"The safety and well-being of our rural communities must be the top priority," said Senator Alvarado-Gil.  "I strongly urge the California Department of State Hospitals (DSH) to conduct thorough due diligence in finding a safe and suitable placement for sexually violent predators."

The proposed placement of William Stephenson in Placer County has reignited fears among residents and local officials. This underscores the need for continued advocacy and reform in the placement and supervision of sexually violent predators, ensuring public safety is not compromised.

Senator Alvarado-Gil is committed to working with local authorities, community members, and legislative colleagues to address this pressing issue. Together, they strive to enact necessary reforms that prioritize community safety, protect vulnerable populations, and maintain the integrity of rural communities throughout the state.
