Press Release

Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil honors the Late Corporal Ronil Singh at the Highway 33 Memorial Dedication

At 8:00 a.m. sharp, the cannon was fired in downtown Newman for the start of the 2nd annual Tunnel to Towers 5k Run and Walk. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation previously assisted the Singh Family after their beloved family member, Corporal Ronil Singh, lost his life while on duty. Although this event happens nationally, it first took place in Newman, CA, in 2022 to heal the loss of Corporal Singh and all the first responders who lost their lives on duty. Two District Representatives from Senator Alvarado-Gil’s office participated in the run.

Recalling the heavy emotions that arose during the Tunnel to Towers event, District Representative Jacob Faulder stated, “We received badges of fallen officers to place on our shirts to symbolize who we are running for. While I ran, I refused to stop, remembering their stories and the sacrifice they made for us.”

Following the Tunnel to Towers event, the community joined the family, friends, and governmental officials at the Downtown Plaza to reveal the memorial signage to be placed on the east side of Hwy 33. The first thing Senator Alvarado-Gil did when she was sworn into office was ensure this project would get done. Senator Alvarado-Gil picked up the application where her predecessor left off and followed the appeal process with CalTrans. One of the issues the Senator and others faced for the memorial was the cost, as the State of California does not pay for the memorial. The community gathered to fundraise on top of the $5,000 Stanislaus Supervisor Channce Condit and Senator Alvarado-Gil pulled together.

During Senator Alvarado-Gil’s remarks, she stated, “The free, courageous, and brave here in California should be respected, should not have to be buried with their parents witnessing what their kids witness and spouses witness. I pledge to defend the U.S. Constitution and the California Constitution, with the flag of the thin blue line, I pledge always to defend, honor and respect the fallen, their family and the community they leave behind”.

The Senator presented a Memorial Resolution to the Singh Family on behalf of the California State Senate. She and the family shared a heartfelt embrace as they remembered the life of Corporal Ronil Singh and honored him for his braveness and commitment to serving his community. He will always be a hero in the hearts of the people.
