Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil Applauds Federal Judge's Decision to Protect Second Amendment Rights

Today, Senator Marie-Alvarado-Gil commends the recent decision by U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney to block the implementation of Senate Bill 2 (SB 2), which was slated to take effect on January 1, 2024. Judge Carney deemed a key provision of the bill as "unconstitutional," upholding the fundamental rights of law-abiding citizens in California who have been granted a concealed weapons permit (CCW).

SB 2, which aims to restrict concealed carry privileges in various public spaces, faced substantial criticism from constituents and gun rights advocates within Senator Alvarado-Gil’s district. Senate District 4, known for its unwavering support of the Second Amendment, has consistently championed the rights of responsible gun owners.

Senator Alvarado-Gil stated, "I am pleased with Judge Carney’s decision to protect the constitutional rights of our law-abiding citizens. The Second Amendment is a cornerstone of our nation's history, and while we recognize the importance of public safety, it is imperative that we strike a balance that respects the rights of responsible gun owners."

The Senator added there is a need for thoughtful and comprehensive legislation to address public safety concerns without compromising the rights of citizens. As the legal process unfolds, Senator Alvarado-Gil remains dedicated to representing the interests and values of California’s citizens. The Senator encourages constituents to stay engaged in the legislative process and will continue to advocate for responsible and constitutionally sound policies.

Senator Alvarado-Gil represents the 4th Senate District including the Counties of Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne.
