Happy Friday Senate District 4‚

We are one step closer to becoming a wildfire resilient California! My Senate Bill 1088 passed the Senate Governmental Organization Committee unanimously this week. This bill addresses the urgent need to protect rural communities from catastrophic wildfires by focusing on enhancing water infrastructure in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). It also prioritizes at-risk rural mountain communities‚ several of which are in my district‚ that have inadequate water systems‚ providing them with increased state matching funds to improve firefighting capabilities and overall resilience. SB 1088 now heads to the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee.

More good news. Senate Bill 1261 has also passed unanimously out of the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee! This bill would increase funding and support for local and state fairs‚ and would allow fairgrounds to continue playing a vital role during natural disasters and emergencies by providing the State Office of Emergency Services and other state and federal partners a centralized location to operate. SB 1261 now heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Details on SB 1261: Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil Proposes Legislation to Boost Funding for Local and State Fairs‚ Aiming to Support Community Traditions and Economic Growth | California Senate District 4

As many of you know‚ water is the lifeblood of our Golden State – it is vital for our economy and agriculture. Yet‚ 80% of demand comes from Southern California‚ and it is stressing our resources. Robust water infrastructure is essential especially in rural areas‚ not just for agriculture‚ but also to combat wildfires and protect our environment. I shared this message with local‚ state‚ and federal leaders at the Mountain Counties Water Resources Association (MCWRA) Reception earlier this week. I am advocating for the resources needed to make it happen and look forward to working with my like-minded colleagues and stakeholders.

“The fight is never about grapes or lettuce. It is always about people.” This quote from Cesar Chavez resonates with me‚ and still stands relevant today. I want to thank the Cesar Chavez Community Celebration Committee for inviting me to speak about his impact and the impact of Dolores Huerta on California’s labor movement. It was an honor to also present a certificate of recognition to Herlinda Gonzales‚ an activist who has devoted her life to supporting farm workers across Stanislaus County at the event.
