Happy Friday Senate District 4,

I am still on my journey through California for my Tribal Listening Tour. It has certainly been an eye-opening experience meeting with Tribal leaders and having thoughtful conversations with them about the challenges and successes they are currently facing. I will have more to share from my journey when I return next week.

Around the district, my team had the privilege of listening to the remarkable stories of courage and determination at the Every Student Succeeding event in Ceres. Despite facing significant challenges including behavioral struggles, loss, illness, or navigating the foster care system, these students have shown incredible resilience in their academic journey. I am proud of how they not only overcome obstacles but also excel in their studies. These students are not just students; they are shining examples of strength and resilience. A big congratulations to all the students who were nominated – your achievements are not just acknowledged but celebrated.

My team also celebrated the grand opening of Urban Barber College, the first dedicated barber school in Modesto! This is a significant step towards providing accessible pathways to careers in barbering for our talented #SD4 residents. As a strong advocate for small businesses, I’m particularly proud of the emphasis this school places on teaching its students the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. By equipping our future barbers with the skills to start and grow their own businesses, we’re not just investing in individuals; we’re investing in the economic prosperity of our city.

Good news for college students! California’s priority Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) deadline has been extended. This extension grants students attending four-year universities until May 2nd to complete their FAFSA applications, ensuring they have enough time to secure essential federal student aid. Additionally, students enrolled in community colleges will have until September 2nd to complete their applications. This extension underscores our commitment to supporting students in accessing the financial assistance they need to thrive academically. For more information, please visit: https://studentaid.gov.
