Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil hosts Frog Jumping at the Capitol

State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil sponsored Frog Jumpers from around the State to jump at the State Capitol yesterday. The Senator was joined by fellow lawmakers, members of the media, and staffers from the Assembly and State Senate.

Senate District 4 is home to the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, which will be held May 18th-21st at Frogtown in Angeles Camp.

The first Frog Jump was held in 1928 as part of a community celebration marking the paving of Main Street in Angels Camp joining forces with the Calaveras County Fair in 1937 at the facility known as Frogtown.

In the spirit of Mark Twain’s “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” entrants jumped, hollered, and tickled their frogs to leap for victory. Ultimately, Assemblymember Chen’s team was victorious with a frog named Phil that soared 12 feet 5 inches.

“It was a great day of fun highlighting an important part of our history in Calaveras County. Unfortunately, my frog only jumped 9 feet; there’s always next year,” stated Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil, who plans on growing the event to draw attention to the Calaveras Fair.
